Role & Responsibilities
In the role of Senior Packaging Engineer, you will be accountable for all stages of packaging Print & Converting (P&C) development, including planning, de-risking, accurate and timely information and technical insight to the teams, stakeholders, markets, and functions to ensure optimal decision-making and delivery. Further you will;
• Achieve, in close collaboration with the Brand design team, design intent & effective cost structure by applying a high level of technical competence as a specialist in printing to the design, development and/or the implementation of complex packaging.
• Manage relationship with suppliers on printed material development & qualification.
• Work closely with the packaging development teams for feasibility and packing line validation of new printed materials or decoration.
• Contribute to and execute department’s innovation, sustainability and productivity in pack print strategies ensuring performance, quality, compliance, consumer and commercial requirements are aligned and integrated to the departmental strategy.
While this position is formally part of Philip Morris International (PMI), the contract and placement will be with Swedish Match North- Europe, with an amazing office in central Stockholm, Sweden. You will be part of a truly global team and work in an international environment, collaborating with colleagues and stakeholders across multiple markets (planned travelilng appx. 15%), reporting to Printing & Converting Manager in Switzerland.
Key Deliverables
• Support the “360 degree” graphics and finish technology assessment as part of new packaging development, specifically on the printed material/decoration.
• Contribute to packaging equipment specification to ensure full integration of graphical/finish elements to machine operating ranges and material specification.
• Ensure key technical assets are available at critical milestones to enable executional readiness and for seamless transition to the deployment phase: Good to Design file / Master Printing Report / Input into design master file / Master Color Standard.
• Partner with packaging deployment at relevant stages of the development process to ensure seamless executional and specification readiness and availability of appropriate quality standards.
• Input to lead vendor selection (in partnership with Procurement) and provide expert resource on vendor capabilities.
• Attend key print trials at vendors where needed, including support to the packaging deployment team during the 1st commercial print run of packaging assets.
• Play a key cross-functional role in executional readiness, simplification and enable speed to market.
• Understand and act as a key expert resource on regulatory and compliance requirements and specifics from a global standpoint as they relate to printed components.
• Support when required root causes analysis in case of quality issues.
Key Experience & Qualities
You bring strong expertise in packaging materials, inks, print decoration, and finishing technologies, along with a solid foundation in pre-press processes such as file preparation, proofing, plate making, and troubleshooting. Extensive knowledge of color management techniques, including ICC profiling, color calibration, and maintaining color consistency across various substrates and printing conditions, is also essential. Further, you are a quick learner with a pragmatic, analytical, and autonomous mindset.
An understanding of the runability of printed materials on packaging lines, combined with insights into substrate and ink performance and recyclability, will be key to success in this role. Strong communication and presentation skills enable you to collaborate and influence effectively across all levels of the organization and with external suppliers. This is further supported by proven risk assessment and problem-solving capabilities, as well as demonstrated leadership skills.
• Minimum 6-8 years of experience ideally with a focus in Flexo, offset and digital printing, including color management, pre-press processes, and solving on-press issues. Demonstrated experience in printing on self-adhesive materials, ensuring high-quality output and adherence to specifications
• Fluent in English. Proficiency in Swedish is a plus.
• Computer skills/Software: Adobe Suite, Product Lifecycle Management tools, MS Office, CAD.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced studies in engineering, printing, converting, material science, or a related field.
