The role
The Director Backend is responsible for leading the direction and execution of the backend and platform development and maintenance, ensuring solutions meet the organization’s evolving needs and future growth. This role will involve overseeing all developers working with backend development, driving high-quality, scalable, and secure software solutions that align with broader company goals. This person will collaborate closely with the CTO, product managers, other senior leaders, and the executive team to shape and execute software development strategies that support business objectives. As a key senior leader within the engineering organization, this position will establish and champion best practices in architecture, coding standards, and agile methodologies.
Areas of responsibilities
- Lead and mentor developers and work with the Directors and other managers to foster a high-performance culture that emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and quality.
- Oversee and strategically guide the design, development, and delivery of software solutions that align with organizational goals and exceed customer expectations.
- Drive complex architecture and system design discussions to ensure solutions are scalable, secure, and high-performing, supporting the organization’s long-term vision.
- Work with the CTO to create and maintain budgets for the engineering organization.
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders to define and execute software development roadmaps, prioritizing initiatives that align with broader company objectives.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including product management, Infrastructure teams, and executive leadership, fostering alignment on strategic goals.
- Champion the use of modern development methodologies (e.g. Agile, Kanban, Scrum) and tools, ensuring efficient project management and delivery.
- Oversee incident management, troubleshooting, and resolution of critical production issues.
- Keep teams updated on the latest trends in technology and development best practices, particularly in areas relevant to frontend, backend, cloud services, and security.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- Extensive experience leading software development teams in a SaaS or technology-driven environment.
- Strong expertise in backend technologies (e.g., Python, Go, etc.).
- Strong expertise in API development, web services, and system architecture for large-scale applications.
- Experience working with databases (SQL and NoSQL) and ensuring high performance and reliability.
- Proficiency with cloud services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and modern infrastructure practices like containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Significant experience with version control systems such as Git and GitHub.
- Significant experience implementing agile development processes and overseeing large software projects from conception to delivery.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to foster collaboration across teams.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle complex technical challenges.
- Experience in SaaS product development and a strong understanding of business-to-business software solutions.
